Content Description

While the donor and date of donation of this collection are unknown, the photo album is stamped with the name Teddy E. Madsen, as is photo No.4. The only Teddy Madsen found in the Deseret News obituary file was a Teddy L. Madsen, who was born in 1904 and was "active in irrigation, grazing and livestock groups." He was also an L.D.S. (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Church member. He died February 25, 1960 at his cattle ranch near Mount Pleasant. It is impossible for this to be the Teddy Madsen pictured in this collection, since he would only have been three years old in 1907, which is the date of photo No.186. It would be reasonable to assume that Teddy E. was Teddy L.'s father, given the similarity in occupation.

The bulk of this collection consists of 202 prints in a photo album that document the herding of range sheep and the camp life of Madsen and his partners. The album is flush with archetypal photos of range life including covered wagons, sheep dogs, and guns. The herding crew was apparently a jovial bunch, as there are many photos of them "hamming it up" with mock gun duels, etcetera. Photo No.186 is helpful in that it gives us a date, but also gives us a sense of the humor of the crew: Madsen holds a cleaned turkey in one hand and a sign in the other which reads "Thanks give-us. West Desert. 1907." Notable in the album are a cyanotype (No.5), some Indians gathering brush (No.47/50), and the women's Brigham Young University (BYU) basketball team. There are also a few hand-tinted photos throughout.

Following the photo album are 27 loose prints, of which the first three are sheep and ranch oriented, the rest being family photos and miscellaneous. Notable in this folder are a cyanotype (No.205), and a photo of Niagra Falls, New York (No.217).
