Galand W. Nield was born (November 16, 1947) and raised in Afton, Wyoming. In the late 1960s, Galand served a two-year mission in Australia for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1969, after completing his mission, he returned home to Wyoming and married Maureen Susan Meecham. Very soon after his marriage he was drafted to serve in the United States Army. In 1969 Galand left for Fort Benning, Georgia for basic training and then was sent on to Fort Ord in California. From March of 1970 to March of 1971, Galand served in Vietnam with the "Tropic Lightning" 25th Division, HHC 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry, and then the "Screaming Eagles" 101st Airborne, HHC 3/506. Galand was awarded a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and various other medals along with sustaining service-related injuries. Galand left Vietnam in March of 1971 and had the rank of Sergeant when he left the military. He currently resides in Smithfield, Utah, and is the owner of Cache Valley Crafts.
