Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Robert Lee "Bob" Reed (1914-2005) fought in the Spanish Civil War with the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion until December 1938. He was on the City of Barcelona when it sank. He has been an active member of the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and from approximately 1974 to 1978 was president of the Seattle Chapter of the U.S. Committee For a Democratic Spain. In 1984 Reed initiated the "Northwest to Nicaragua Ambulance Campaign," a fund-raising campaign which purchased three ambulances for Nicaragua. The project was sponsored by the Church Council of Greater Seattle.

Includes manuscript for "The Last Good Fight" by Hank Rubin (later published in 1997 as "Spain's cause was mine"). This autobiographical manuscript forms part of a collection being built by Bob Reed about Americans who fought in the Spanish Civil War and who enlisted in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion (popularly known as the Abraham Lincoln Brigade) of the Spanish Republican Army in 1936-1939.

Scope and Content: Manuscript for "The Last Good Fight" by Hank Rubin. This autobiographical manuscript forms part of a collection being built by Bob Reed about Americans who fought in the Spanish Civil War and who enlisted in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion (popularly known as the Abraham Lincoln Brigade) of the Spanish Republican Army in 1936-1939. The book was published in 1987 by the Southern Illinois University Press under the title Spain's cause was mine: a memoir of an American medic in the Spanish Civil War.
