Biographical Note

Richard W. Grow was born in Lynndyl, Utah in 1925. He received his B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Utah in 1948 and 1949. He earned his Ph.D in electrical engineering at Stanford University in 1955. Dr. Grow returned to the University of Utah as an associate research professor in 1958. His research focused on microwave and millimeter wave-vacuum tubes, solid-state devices, quantum electronic devices, applied optics, microwave diagnostics, and millimeter wave and infared imaging. He served as the Director of the High Velocity Laboratory from 1959 until 1963. In 1964, he became the Chairman of the the Electrical Engineering Department and served in that position until 1977. After resigning the chair, Dr. Grow continued as a professor in the department until his retirement in April 2011. He died in June of 2011.

Content Description

The bulk of the material in this collection consists of course descriptions, correspondence, memoranda, and reports from Dr. Grow's chairmanship of the Department of Electircal Engineering from 1964 to 1977. Topics covered include curriculum development, departmental goals and long-range planning, and the electrical engineering department's interaction with the College of Engineering as well as university administration. The material dating from the period after his chairmansip consists primarily of course descriptions of classes that Dr. Grow taught as well as records generated from his involvement in student programs such as the AFTER Program, the Engineering Clinic, and Technical Open House.
