Historical NoteReturn to Top

James Schultz was an American author who lived among the Blackfeet from 1876-1947. He published several short story collections about his time with the Blackfeet in Montana. Also connected to Montana is Mylie Lawyer's family. Her great grandfather, Chief Lawyer, worked with fur traders in Buffalo country. Chief Lawyer assisted in the assembling of a Nez Perce grammar text. Her second great grandfather, Twisted Hair (Tsap tso kalips kin), and his band aided Lewis and Clark in finding a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Mylie and her family have a long history of indigenous-Euro-American negotiations. Her and her father, Corbett Lawyer, worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs during their lives. Corbett Lawyer aided in writing the first constitution for the Nez Perce tribal government, created an accounting system, and worked on a Nez Perce grammar book, like his grandfather.
