Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Merrill G. Burlingame was born in Boone, Iowa on March 13, 1901, the son of Nathan and Teresa Gildea Burlingame. He attended local schools prior to receiving his doctorate at the University of Iowa in 1936. In 1929 he joined the faculty of Montana State College (now Montana State University) and became chair of the history department in 1935. Burlingame's research interests were primarily concerned with Montana and the frontier west. In 1956 he collaborated with K. Ross Toole in editing a three volume reference work, A History of Montana (New York : Lewis Historical Pub. Co.) Among the contributing authors were Oscar Mueller, Henry G. Merriam, and Stanley Davison. Merrill Burlingame died in Bozeman, Montana on November 14, 1994.

Burlingame. These include typed drafts of their contribution to A History of Montana and some correspondence with Burlingame. Most manuscript drafts bear editorial notations by Burlingame and have been placed in folders labeled by contributor name.

Acquisition Information
Manuscript drafts and related correspondence collected or created by Merrill G. Burlingame for the publication of his 1956 reference work A History of Montana were donated to Montana State University in three separate accessions in 1969. This collection incorporates material formerly assigned numbers 725, 729 and 765.
