Biographical Note
The Guardian Assurance Company of London, England was founded in London in 1821. P.A. Cochran, the creator of this ledger, was an agent for Guardian Assurance based in Woodburn, Oregon. He was born on January 1, 1854 in Linn County, Oregon and died on May 27, 1920 in Woodburn.

This ledger documents insurance policies issued by the Pacific Division of the Guardian Assurance Company of London, England, by P.A. Cochran for property across Montana between 1891 and 1893. The recorded insurance policies cover Granite County, Bozeman, Deer Lodge, Helena, Marysville, East Helena, Choteau County, Custer County, Missoula County, and Lewis and Clark County. Guardian Assurance insured several different types of companies and organizations, but the majority in this ledger are religious institutions and local mercantile businesses.
