Historical Note
Roger Starr (1918 - 2001) was an intelligence officer during World War II, businessman, and New York City housing administrator. Later in life, he became a writer for The New York Times and a member of the New York Times Editorial Board. He later became editor of New York: The City Journal. He also authored books on housing economics and sociology: Urban Choices (1966) and The Living End (1967). He was the recipient of the 1970 International Design Award, named Director of the National Housing Conference in 1959, also Executive Director of Citizens Housing and Planning Council in New York City.
Content Description
The collection contains articles, books, book reviews, speeches, editorials on housing, politics, New York City, and urban planning by Starr. There are periodicals, newsletters, and subject files on housing, urban planning, and urban affairs. Additionally, the collection contains Starr’s correspondence. There are also files on Mason Mix, Inc., Sound Ship Building Corporation, The Mason Company, and Frederick Starr Contracting Company located in New York and Connecticut.
