Biographical Note

Linguist John C. Rath was the Director of Heiltsuk Language Program in Waglisla (also called Bella Bella), British Columbia, Canada and the resident linguist of Waglisla for many years. Rath is an expert in North Wakashan languages spoken by the Indigenous peoples of the coast of what is now known as British Columbia. Rath has authored a number of publications, many of which were co-written with linguist Neville J. Lincoln from Simon Fraser University. Rath’s publications include: "North Wakashan Comparative Root List (1980)," "North Wakashan Comparative Word List (1980)," "A Practical Heiltsuk-English Dictionary with a Grammatical Introduction (1981)," "Oowekeeno Oral Traditions (1982)," and "Phonology, Dictionary, and Listing of Roots and Lexical Derivates of the Haisla Language of Kitlope and Kitimaat, B.C. (1986)."

Content Description

Materials include linguistic field notes, word lists, and manuscripts with transcriptions documenting various North Wakashan languages (1974-1993). The languages documented are Haisla, Kwak'wala, and the two dialects of Heiltsuk-Oowekyala, Oowekyala and Híɫzaqv (Heiltsuk). Some of the materials are phonemic transcriptions and others are morphophonemic transcriptions.
