Historical NoteReturn to Top
Joseph Metcalf Roebling was the great grandson of Washington Augustus Roebling who is known for his work on building the Brooklyn Bridge. Joseph Roebling’s forebears also completed work on the George Washington Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. What made these bridges and other advancements of the Industrial Age possible was what became known as Roebling wire rope. The invention would go on to be used in telegraphs, electricity, mines, and elevators.
