He was born in Washington D.C. on December 17, 1932, and raised in Illinois, Maryland, Colorado, and Wyoming. He graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park and went on to the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore. He married, Carole, and had seven children. Ward dedicated his practice and life to serving rural Western communities, working in hospitals from the Nebraska panhandle to Eastern Utah. His goal was to bring better medicine to rural Western communities.

Ward was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed the beauty of the West and the rugged individualism of the Western lifestyle. He collected Western art and history, taking a particular interest in the art of E. “Bill” William Gollings. He started the Inside Edge Ski Shop in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and was an initial developer of the Steamboat Springs, Colorado Ski Area. He skied and raced well into his 80s.
