Summary
The Office of Vice President for University Relations is primarily responsible for public relations, development, and state and federal government relations for the University of Utah. This collection contains administrative records from Vice Presidents Reuben J. Snow (1975-1984) and Ted Capener (1985-1999). Also indcluded are materials related to the inaugurations of several University of Utah Presidents between 1964 and 1998.

Historical Note

Prior to 1974, public relations for the University of Utah was under the auspices of the Office of Vice President for Economic and Community Development. In 1973, this office was abolished and later replaced by the newly-created Office of Vice President for University Relations in 1974. Dr. Raymond L. Hixson, previously Vice President of Economic and Community Development, was appointed by President David P. Gardner to the new position where he served until 1975. Reuben J. Snow was appointed as Vice President of University Relations in 1975 and served in that position until 1984. Ted Capener became the Vice President for University Relations in 1985 and held the position until 1999.

Content Description

The bulk of the collection consists of administrative records from the administrations of Reuben J. Snow (1975-1984) and Ted Capener (1985-1999). These records are mainly comprised of correspondence, meeting mintues, and reports from the Office of the Vice President of Unviersity Relations and its subordinate offices. Among the principle subjects covered are various activities of the Athletics Department, the Alumni Association, and government relations. Included as well are several other events such the Anti-Aparteid Movement of the 1980s and cold fusion research. 1.25 linear feet of material consists of records related to the inaugurations of University of Utah Presidents James Fletcher, David P. Gardner, Chase N. Peterson, Arthur K. Smith, and J. Bernard Machen. 0.25 linear feet of material consists of presidential medallions which were presented to University Presidents upon their inauguration.
