Historical Note
Samuel J. Parker was the son of Reverend Samuel Parker, a missionary who travelled throughout the Pacific Northwest in the 1830s, including Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. He trained at Union Theological Seminary, and served as a physician during the Civil War. He was an avid writer, and wrote articles for national journals of various topics, as well as a manuscript about the journey begun in 1835 by his father from Ithaca to the Oregon Territory.
Content Description
The Samuel J. Parker Papers include "Oregon Mission Period," a handwritten account of the early history of the missions of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, as well as several published articles by Samuel J. Parker. This collection, which spans from 1834 through 1910, also includes letters to and from Samuel J. Parker, primarily concerning the missionary work of his father, newspaper clippings about Reverend Samuel J. Parker, and notes about Parker's manuscript "The History of Oregon and the Pacific Coast and Its Especial Connection with Ithaca, New York."
