Historical Note

Stimson Hall, named after Fred S. Stimson, a member of the Board of Regents, opened its doors in the fall of 1922. Except for a brief period during the Second World War, Stimson has always been a men's dormitory. The formal organization of the dormitory consists of three groups: the Montezuma Club, the main governing body; the Stimson Senate, an honorary society; and the Stimson Sponsors, who act as student advisors.

Content Description

The records of Stimson Hall date from 1924 to 1976. The records were originally divided into five series: Publications, Stimson Senate, Montezuma Club, Alumni and Other Papers, and Oversize Materials. For the most part, this arrangement has been retained. However, in a few instances, folders were moved within record series so that they filled obvious gaps in logical sequences. The records consist of minutes, publications, newspaper clippings, correspondence, reports, rosters, applications, photographs, song sheets, guest registers, and memorabilia.

Administrative Information

Acquisition Information

The records of Stimson Hall were transferred to Washington State University Libraries by Norman B. King, Stimson's Head Resident (1971-1973), in August 1973 (WSU 155). Concern for the preservation of these records was generated by the celebration of Stimson's fiftieth anniversary amidst discussion on campus for the elimination of Stimson as a dormitory or as a building put to other use. An additional deposit was made in January 1977 (UA 77-1) by Jim Allen, Stimson's President (1976-1977).

Processing Note

The records were processed in February 1984 by Paul Green.
