Historical NoteReturn to Top

Augustus Locke was born on August 22, 1883 in North Adams, Massachusetts to Martha Payson Perkins and Augustus Woodbury Locke. He graduated from the Mining School at Harvard University. On December 18, 1915 he married Helen Alma Lincoln; together, they had three children. In 1964 he remarried to Alice Bradley. Locke worked as a mining and economic geologist, surveying mines and mining areas throughout the western United States and Mexico, with a concentration in Utah and California. He developed techniques to evaluate ores based on outcroppings, documented in his 1926 book Leached Outcrops and Guides to Copper Ore.

Augustus Locke died on February 18, 1981 in Menlo Park, California.
