Historical Note
Rufus F. Zogbaum was an artist and illustrator known for his western and military subjects. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, August 28, 1849, and attended the Art Student’s League in New York City in 1878 and 1879, afterwards traveling to Paris to continue his studies in Europe. In 1884 he accompanied the 2nd U.S. Cavalry through Montana and Idaho as a correspondent and illustrator for Harper’s Magazine. He sent numerous other articles and illustrations to Harper’s and other periodicals regarding the west between 1886 and 1890, and he was among the first artists to draw inspiration from the figure of the cowboy. During and after the Spanish-American War he turned primarily to the military and especially to the navy for his subjects. Zogbaum died in New York City on October 22, 1925.
Content Description
The collection contains two letters from Zogbaum describing his experiences in Montana and Idaho in 1884; photographs of Indians, cavalry, and western towns and places; newspaper and magazine clippings by and about Zogbaum; and eight notebooks in which Zogbaum made notes and diary entries as well as drawings. The first notebook/diary (1882, 1884) covers the events of his march with the 2nd Cavalry through Montana and Idaho and includes accounts of vigilante activity in Montana at that time. The third notebook contains sketches of U.S. forces and of Cuba during the Spanish-American War.
