Biographical Note

Charles Edward Argersinger (1951-2013) was born in Schenectady, NY, and grew up in Arizona. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in music from Arizona State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He taught at California State University, Bakersfield and DePaul University before joining the faculty at Washington State University (WSU). While at WSU, he founded the WSU Festival of Contemporary Art Music in 1989. He retired from WSU in 2009.

Content Description

This collection consists of musical compositions and arrangements by Charles Argersinger, as well as recordings of his work and his influences. It includes two main genres: jazz and contemporary art music. The type and amount of material varies for specific works; in many cases, there is a full score, parts, and other documentation; in others, the contents are fragmentary or incomplete. Recordings come in various formats including floppy disk, reel-to-reel tape, VHS tape, digital audio tape (DAT), CD, cassette tape, and vinyl record.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in two series, Compositions and Arrangements (Series 1), and Recordings (Series 2). Series 1 is arranged alphabetically by title within each genre subseries or separated into the oversize subseries. Series 2 is arranged by genre and then by format.

Acquisition Information

Jana Argersinger donated this collection to the Washington State University Libraries in 2019 (MS 2019.05) and 2020 (MS 2020.31).

Processing Note

Cheryl Gunselman provided arrangement and created the preliminary finding aid to the initial installment of this collection. Kathryn Manis began processing this collection in 2021 following the 2020 donation. Stephanie Mahar completed processing in 2022.
