Biographical Note

Grace Elizabeth “Liz” Fearl was born on June 27, 1920 in Missoula, Montana to William and Grace Fearl. Her father worked as a meat cutter and later owned Fearl and Son Grocery in Missoula. In 1941, Fearl enrolled at the University of Montana in Missoula (then called Montana State University), where she studied physical education and served as the vice president of the Women’s Athletic Association, president of the swimming club, earned a letter in volleyball, and was an active member of Sigma Kappa sorority. After graduating in 1944, Fearl worked as a high school physical education and home economics teacher in Washington. She married Edgar Roberts, a farmer, on December 30, 1952, and settled in Ocosta, Washington. In addition to teaching at Ocosta High School and farming with Edgar, she enjoyed horseback riding, gardening, photography, painting, and traveling. She visited five of the seven continents before she died on July 18, 1990.

Content Description

The Grace Elizabeth “Liz” Fearl Photograph Album contains photos of Fearl’s time at the University of Montana in Missoula in the 1940s. The album documents many of the campus buildings, her friends and acquaintances, social life within the Sigma Kappa sorority house, and UM traditional events such as Aber Day and the Women’s Athletic Association’s annual spring “Play Day,” a women’s field sports day. In addition, the album contains photos of ROTC and Civilian Pilot Training Program members marching on campus and a few family photos taken after Fearl graduated.

Heidi Thomas, Liz Fearl’s great niece, held the photo album before she donated it the University of Montana in 2020.

Four photos from the album were removed by the collection’s donor, Heidi Thomas, prior to donation to the University of Montana.
