Historical Note

The Gay and Lesbian Community Council of Utah (GLCCU) was established in 1986. The GLCCU fostered communication between Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender groups, and law enforcement groups in Utah. GLCCU established programs involving outreach, anti-violence, AIDS awareness, and managing the Utah Pride Festival. In 1991, GLCCU established the Utah Stonewall Center. The mission of the center was to provide a safe and supportive meeting place for gays and lesbians along the Wasatch Front. The center functioned as a meeting place for support groups, workshops, and seminars, as well as an information clearinghouse. The center also included an art gallery, library, and coffee shop. In 1995, Utah Stonewall Center officially broke from the GLCCU and in 1997 closed its doors. In 1998, the center reopened under new leadership with the name, Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Utah. The center then included a cafe, lending library, meeting space, and a youth activity center. It sponsored programs including support and social groups, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention programs, gender-based book clubs, and coming-out groups. In 2002, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center combined with Utah Pride, Inc. Then in 2005, the center became the Utah Pride Center.
