Historical Note

Born In Logan, Utah September 9, 1951, Ross C. “Rocky” Anderson is the former mayor of Salt Lake City. Anderson received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, and went on to earn a J.D. from George Washington University Law School. Anderson practiced law for twenty-one years in Salt Lake City, specializing in civil litigation. During this time he was listed in Best Lawyers in America, served as Chair of the Utah State Bar Litigation Section, and was Editor-in-Chief of Voir Dire legal journal. He served as President of the boards of the Utah affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, Citizens for Penal Reform, and Guadalupe Education Programs. He was a board member of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and Common Cause of Utah.

1996 Anderson ran unsuccessfully for Congress. In 1999 Anderson was elected as mayor of Salt Lake City, and was reelected for a second four-year term in 2003. After leaving office, Anderson founded and now serves as the Executive Director for High Road for Human Rights, nonprofit advocacy group.

The Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson papers (1978-2009) contain the correspondence, professional and political papers of Rocky Anderson. Included are records from his private law practice, Anderson and Karrenberg, material relating to his services on various boards, as well as campaign materials from Anderson's unsuccessful congressional campaign, as well as his Salt Lake City mayoral campaigns.
