Biographical Note
Photographer Wilhelm Hammerschmidt had a shop in Cairo during the 1860s. He sold photographs as well as photographic equipment and supplies.
Content Description
The collection consists of eleven black-and-white photographic prints made in the 1860s. The images depict sites in several Egyptian cities, including Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswān. The Cairo images include temples, mosques, and the Cairo citadel. Also included are images of temple complexes at Philae and Karnak; the famous Karnak obelisks appear in two photographs.
