Historical Note
Originally born in Hurricane Grove, Wisconsin, Major Ernest H. Keene (1882-1970) came to Seattle in 1890. He attended the Randall School in Madrona, T.T. Minor and Seattle High School. Keene enlisted with the National Guard in 1901 and served as a captain with the infantry at the Mexican border at Calexico in 1916. During World War I, he was assistant adjutant general and United States property disbursing officer for Washington State. During World War II, he worked in the Army's finance department. From 1945 to 1957, he held a job in the state licensing office.
Content Description
The collection includes theater magazines and programs from Seattle's Metropolitan, Moore, Orpheum and President theaters from 1917 to 1936. The collection also includes a journal which Keene is believed to have kept from the 1930s to the 1960s documenting Seattle theaters and theater performances dating back to 1901; lists of songs; notes on Keene's schooling and military service, and other genealogical information about Keene's family.
