Historical Background
On December 24, 1939 ex-University of Washington basketball players, A.A.U. [Amateur Athletic Union] All Stars, Ross Werner, Bob Egge, Dick Egge, Jack Gannon, Ralph Cairney, Ed Loverisch, Jack Hanover and Chuck Wagner departed with Coach Hec Edmumdson for a two month tour of the Phillippines, Japan and China. During a 3 day tournament in Manila, they played and defeated the Japanese All Stars, 32-31, their only real challengers. Newspapers reported that the team, all of whom were nearly six feet tall or more, were impressed by the agility and speed of their Japanese opponents. The team played games in four additional provinces in the Phillippines. From the Phillippines they went on to defeat teams in Japan, China and Honolulu. They won all 21 of their games. There was extensive newspaper coverage of the games both in English and Spanish.
The team enjoyed Valentine's Day aboard the R.M.S. Empress of Russia, a British built steamship, with an elaborate banquet. Throughout the tour the games were well attended by local residents.
Newspaper coverage appeared in the Seattle Post Intellegencer, Seattle Times, as well as an unidentified Spanish language paper.
