Historical Note

The Vice President for Research reports to the President and, along with the Vice Presidents for Academic Affairs and Health Sciences, advises the President in all matters involving research policy and support. The primary responsibility of this office is the administration of cost-sharing and cost-matching for research projects. University departments reporting to the Vice President for Research includes the Office of Sponsored Projects, the Technology Transfer Office, the Department of Animal Resources, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and the Institutional Review Board. James J. Brophy served as Vice President for Research from 1979 to 1990. Richard Koehn was Vice President from 1992 to 2001.

Content Description

This collection contains records that were generated during the terms of Vice Presidents James J. Brophy and Richard Koehn. The first series consists of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and reports that document the general administrative functions of the Vice Presidnt of Research Office and the interaction it had with federal, state, and private organizations to secure funding for research projects at the University of Utah. The second series of the collection (2.5 linear feet) are records of the University's research into cold fusion and the National Cold Fusion Institute which operated from 1989-1991.
