Historical Note

The School of Fine Arts was established in 1947. It was renamed the College of Fine Arts in 1948. It comprised the disciplines of music, drama, dance, art, and architecture.

The most dramatic changes in the College of Fine Arts during the period covered by this collection were those undergone by the Department of Ballet and Modern Dance. In 1966, the Ballet program was severed from the Department of Theatre and Ballet and merged with the Modern Dance program, previously a part of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, to form the Department of Ballet and Modern Dance under the auspices of the College of Fine Arts. This arrangement lasted until 1978 when the two programs were separated into independent departments.
