Historical Note

The creation of the University of Washington's College of Pharmacy in 1894 was spurred on by the lobbying efforts of the Washington State Pharmaceutical Association to require all state pharmacists to be graduates in pharmacy. Once the bill was passed in 1893, the WSPA, the board of pharmacy, and individual business leaders convinced the Board of Regents to establish the College of Pharmacy, today the third oldest currently recognized school at the University. The first dean of the College was Charles Hill, a professor of chemistry, botany, and microscopy, and the faculty consisted of three volunteers. The first class graduated in May 1896, a year after having moved into the second floor of Denny Hall and acquiring Henry Coffenberry Myers as the second dean. In 1910, the School moved into Bagley Hall, a legacy from the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition held on the University campus and by the 1920's overcrowding from returning veterans forced dean Johnson to contemplate a new facility. The Public Works Administration created a new building in 1937 that was named Bagley Hall and the previous building was renamed Architecture Hall. The continual growth prompted several name changes until the current School of Pharmacy was adopted in 1972.

In 1978, Milo Gibaldi brought his international reputation for biopharmaceutic and pharmacokinetic research to the School of Pharmacy. During his tenure as dean, the School relocated its administrative offices and the Department of Pharmacy Practice to the T-Wing in the Health Sciences Building. In 1980, research support for the School surpassed one million dollars and the Department of Pharmaceutic Sciences was divided into the departments of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutics. A two-year, post-baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program was established with the support of the School's relationship with the UW's major teaching and research medical centers, Harborview Medical Center, and University of Washington Medical Center. The first class graduated in 1982.
