Historical Note

Paul Albert Volz was born March 26, 1936 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He received his B.A. degree in biological sciences and sociology from Heidelberg College in Ohio in 1958 and went on to receive his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in plant sciences, mycology, and cancer chemotherapy from Michigan State University.

He taught at Washington State University, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Indiana University, and Purdue University before moving on to Eastern Michigan University (EMU). At EMU Paul Volz taught classes in medical mycology, microbial ecology, and mycology, among others. He became the chairman of microbiology and the director of the Mycology Laboratory.

Paul Volz was very active in mycology research. He was the principal investigator responsible for flight operations and experimental procedures of the Apollo MEED (Microbial Ecology Evaluation Device) Program at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and completed numerous studies in the Bahamas, Taiwan, and the Soviet Union.

Content Description

The Paul Albert Volz collection is comprised of materials relating to his professional and research activities. The majority of the collection is published material written by Volz but it also contains numerous student theses and information about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Microbial Ecology Evaluation Device program. The Star Wars© comic strip has a story line with a mycologist named Volz.
