Summary
Milton E. Wadsworth was a professor of metallurgical engineering at the University of Utah from 1948 to 1996. He served as Chairman of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, Dean of the College of Mines and Earth Sciences, and Director of the Utah Mining and Minerals Research Institute. This collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, papers, reprints, proposals, and newspaper articles from his activities as a professor as well as his affiliations with various professional mining and metallurgical societies and government agencies.

Biographical Note

Milton E. Wadsworth was born in Salt Lake City in 1922. Upon receiving his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Utah in 1948, he began working there as a part-time instructor in Metallurgical Engineering. In 1951 he received his Ph.D. in Metallurgy and began his professorship at the University of Utah. During his career he served two stints as Chairman of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering from 1955 to 1966 and from 1974 to 1976, was Director of the Utah Mining and Minerals Research Institute from 1979-1981, and was Dean of the College of Mines and Earth Sciences from 1983 to 1991. Dr. Wadsworth held the title of Distinguished Professor of Metallurgy and Metallurgical Engineering from 1983 until he retired in 1996 as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Metallurgical Engineering. Dr. Wadsworth also served as President of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers in 1991 and was a Life Member of the American Society for Metals. His primary research interests were surface chemistry of mineral systems; hydrometallurgy; extractive metallurgy processes; and intermediate temperature processes such as roasting, decomposition, and reduction.

Content Description

Approximately half of this collection consists of the correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, papers, reprints, and proposals from Dr. Wadsworth's affiliations with the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), the United States Bureau of Mines, and the Utah Geological Survey. The remainder of this collection consists of charters, histories, bulletins, reports, meeting minutes, correspondence and reprints from Dr. Wadsworth's work with the University of Utah College of Engineering, College of Mines and Earth Sciences, College of Mines and Mineral Industries, and the University of Utah Research Institute (UURI).
