Historical Note
Arnold Alden Merica (1898-1954) was a civil engineer. He was the son of Charles Oliver Merica and Alice W. Merica. Charles Merica served as President of the University of Wyoming from 1908 to 1912. After his term at the UW, Merica moved his family back to Indiana where he operated a newspaper in Kendallville until his death in 1918. Alice continued the business thereafter.
Arnold graduated from Kendallville High School and went on to earn a degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1918. His first job out of college was as a draftsman for the oil industry. Merica then moved to Beverly, Chicago, Illinois and later secured a job as a structural engineer for the city of Chicago.
