Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Irwin Caplan was born in Seattle and was an illustrator and cartoonist from an early age. After graduating from University of Washington with a degree in Fine Arts in 1941, he drew for military publications during World War II. After his military service, he contributed to many national publications including Collier's, Life, and Esquire. In the late 1940s through the early 1960s, he drew two nationally syndicated cartoons, "Famous Last Words" and "48 States of Mind," In 1948, he teamed up with other illustrators to form Graphic Studios, a commercial art studio based in Seattle.

2 audiocassettes and 1 transcript from Caplan's interview conducted on February 1, 2001 with Arny Robbins. Caplan recounts his childhood growing up in Seattle's Madison Park neighborhood, attending Garfield high school, and his career in illustration. Also includes some newsclippings about Caplan.
