Historical Note
William L. Carlisle was known as one of the last train robbers in the American West, having committed four robberies between 1916 and 1919 and a successful prison break in 1919. When he was recaptured and injured shortly after escaping, Carlisle returned to prison to serve a sixteen-year sentence. Upon release, he briefly opened a cigar shop in Kemmerer, Wyoming before settling in Laramie to run a cafeteria and filling station until 1956. After selling the business, Carlisle moved to Pennsylvania where he died in 1964.
Content Description
Collection contains an autographed copy of Bill Carlisle Lone Bandit, checks from the Merchants National Bank of Denver and stock certificates for the Keystone Consolidated Mining Co., the Stock Eagle Nest Hill Mining Co., the Boax Mining Company, and the Silver Girl Mining Company. Also included is a quitclaim deed of William Armor to William M. Armor.
