Historical Note

Franklin County, Idaho, was established in 1913 with Preston as its county seat and main population center. In the county's early decades, residents constructed a number of schools organized into several districts. In 1961, however, the county consolidated these smaller districts into two: East Side School District and West Side School District. The East Side School District, also referred to as School District No. 201, serves 280 square miles of eastern Franklin County, including the towns of Preston, Whitney, and Franklin, Banida, Treasureton, Oneida, Mink Creek, Riverdale, Mapleton, Nashville, and Fairview.

Content Description

The East Side Schools collection consists of numerous records from schools and school districts that became part of the East Side School District, dating from 1900 to 1981. The first box contains commencement programs from Preston Public Schools, Oneida Stake Academy, Franklin County LDS Seminary, and Preston High School. Preston High School tuition clams, faculty meeting minutes, and annual information returns are housed in box two, while the third box contains results from the Franklin County Trustee elections held between 1939 and 1976. Finally, boxes four through seven include teacher salary records, supply ledger invoices, ledgers, and other records from Preston Independent School District #1. Notable among these materials is a diary of the Preston High School construction, which contains text and photographs documenting the building's erection in 1940.
