Historical Note
Xenophon Herbert Price (1892-1979) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1914 and was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He served with the U.S. Army 11th Engineering Regiment in World War I.
In 1923 Price was commissioned by Herbert Hoover to be the secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission, which also oversaw American battlefield monuments in Europe. From 1941-1944 he was on the U.S. Army General Staff, and witnessed the Normandy invasion in 1944. Price retired from the Army in 1946.
Content Description
Collection contains materials relating to Price's military career, including speeches on the role of engineering in the military (1938-1944); newspaper clippings (1930-1944); correspondence (1917-1954); subject files with correspondence, research notes, maps, photographs and reports dealing with the American Battle Monuments Commission (1918-1938).
Collection also includes photographs of France in World War I; 22 photograph albums of American battlefield monuments in Europe, Price and his family, and the Normandy invasion (1900-1946); 1 scrapbook of the U.S. Military Academy (1914); 130 slides from World War II, mostly of the Normandy invasion; and miscellaneous maps.
