Historical Note

Clinton and Margaret (née Franks) Lundy hired architect Ira A. Cummings to design their 1949 rambler style home, to catch the view of the Puget Sound. The Lundy House located on the corner of California Ave. and Marine View drive.

Ira E. Cummings, born October 4, 1915, in Lewistown, Montana, began his architectural career in the mid-1930s without formal training. After moving back to the Pacific Northwest in 1945, he established his practice on Bainbridge Island and later in Seattle, where his work quickly gained recognition. Cummings designed a range of projects, particularly single-family homes and spec houses, many of which were featured in local publications. He became known for his collaborations with prominent builders, and his designs can be found in neighborhoods like Magnolia and Queen Anne in Seattle, as well as on Bainbridge Island and Mercer Island. In the 1960s, Cummings shifted focus to healthcare facility design, first in Washington State and later in Los Angeles, working with an international firm. He passed away unexpectedly in 1975 while on a work-related trip to London.
