Historical Note

Cluett, Peabody and Co. began operating on Peebles Island in 1909 where its bleachery treated unfinished cloth. The cloth was then finished on the upper levels of the same facility and shipped to company factories where it was made into men’s collars and shirts. The company’s success reached new heights when Sanford L. Cluett invented a pre-shrinking process for cloth in 1928. The technique was perfected on Peebles Island, and the company soon began to advertise that its products would shrink less than 1% after purchasing. Cluett became the largest manufacturer globally of shirts in the 1940s, but the company experienced a decline in the decades to follow due to the increasingly small size of the original bleachery.
