Historical Note
Francis D. Lyon (1905-1996) was an American film and television director and editor. After completing a degree at UCLA and beginning his career in film in England, Lyon moved back to the United States, where he worked as a film editor from the 1930s to the 1950s. In 1948, he and Robert Parrish won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for "Body and Soul" (1947). Lyon began directing movies in the 1950s, and in 1966, he co-founded United Pictures Corporation. He retired in 1970 and, in 1993, published a memoir titled "Twists of Fate: An Oscar Winner’s International Career."

The collection contains correspondence, including letters from Frank Capra, Gregory Ratoff, Elmo Williams, Hall Bartlett, and Chips Rafferty. Also included are scripts and stories for motion pictures and television productions, including "The Great Locomotive Chase" (1956), "The Oklahoman" (1957), "Tomboy and the Champ" (1961), "Castle of Evil" (1966), "The Money Jungle" (1967), and "Tiger by the Tale" (1970). There are also business and financial documents, manuscripts, including Lyon's memoir, "Twists of Fate: An Oscar Winner’s International Career," personal military information, clippings, and photographs.
