Historical Note

The Auerbach Negative Collection was compiled at the direction of Herbert Samuel Auerbach. The Auerbach's were among the first Jewish residents in Salt Lake City, and operated a department store in downtown Salt Lake City from 1864 to 1977. Herbert Auerbach was the son of Samuel Auerbach, one of the founders of the company, and Eveline Brooks, the daughter of a prominent Jewish Salt Lake City Family. Herbert Auerbach was president of the Auerbach Company from the 1920s until his death in 1945. This collection of negatives were made in preparation for various historical and advertising material documenting the Auerbach family, their business, and the history of Salt Lake City, Utah, including the 1944 booklet Auerbach Co.: 80 Years of Service, 1864-1944.
