Historical Note

The University of Washington, College of Chemistry was established in 1897 with classes and laboratories originally located in Denny Hall. In 1910, classes and labs were moved to the new Bagley Hall. In 1912, the College of Chemistry was included in the newly-created College of Arts and Sciences; however, a year later a separate College of Sciences was established, which included the Department of Chemistry. By 1925, a dual department comprised of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was created to receive accreditation and the latter became an independent department in 1953. Additional departures, including Biochemistry and Oceanography, fueled the development of younger Schools, such as Medicine and Dentistry. The Department currently resides within the College of Arts and Science and is housed in Bagley Hall, Chemistry Building, and Chemistry Library Building.
