Biographical Note
John Robert Bittner was a Hemingway scholar and award-winning professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before his time as a professor, Bittner was a full-time news director of the Peoria Journal Star radio stations in Lafayette, Indiana and was a stringer for United Press International and ABC Radio News. He authored sixteen college textbooks on communication. Additional material from Bittner's research and writing on Hemingway is archived at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. Bittner died in 2002 and was buried near Ernest Hemingway in the Ketchum Cemetery in Idaho.

The collection consists of a mix of personal papers from Bittner and his research on Hemingway. The collection includes photograph albums, plaques, personal memorabilia and published works of Bittner. The collection also includes files on Hemingway.
