Content Description
The Salem and Eastern Oregon photographs cover the late 1800s and early 1900s in Oregon. Included are photographs of the Marion Hotel, the Marion County Court House, the Oregon State Hospital and Oregon State Penitentiary, the residence of Governor Z.F. Moody, Glen Oaks Orphans' Home, and Sacred Heart Academy.

Description: Bridge over the Willamette at Salem
Second bridge in Salem to span the Willamette River, built in 1891.

Description: Samaritan Hospital, Salem, Oregon
Originally called the Cartwright Sanatorium, built in the late 1800s. Later called the Florence Sanatorium, and then Willamette Sanatorium. It was later used as a boarding house. Willamette University used it as a women's residence hall from 1942-1946 when the Navy V-12 unit was housed in Lausanne Hall.

Built in 1863, Sacred Heart Academy was established by the Sisters of the Holy Name and occupied this original structure until the 1960s.

At the time of the photograph the institute was officially known as the "Oregon Institute of the Feeble-Minded". Last known as "Fairview Training Center" when it closed permanently in 2000. All buildings were demolished March 2016. Caption from: https://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn99063957/1910-05-07/ed-1/seq-9/. Photo was taken between Sept 1 - Nov 30 1908, and is of either the Steele or Jones cottage. Photo identified through research by Daryl Pike in 2018.
