Historical Note
E.B. “Pete” Long was a historian and professor of American Studies at the University of Wyoming. He is best known for his research into the American Civil War. Long was born in Whitehall, Wisconsin on October 24, 1919 and attended Miami University in Ohio and Northwestern University in Illinois, but never completed his degree. He pursued careers in journalism, where he developed an interest in the Civil War and soon became a recognized researcher of the period. In 1955, Long became the director of research for the historian Bruce Catton’s project, “Centennial History of the Civil War.” Then he assisted the professor, Allen Nevins on his project, “The Ordeal of the Union.” In 1970, Long became a professor of American Studies and archival consultant at the University of Wyoming until his death on March 31, 1981. E.B. “Pete” Long won awards and was the author, coauthor, researcher, compiler, and editor of numerous books, articles, book reviews, and 500 plus public addresses on the Civil War.
