Biographical Note

Katherine "Tobie" Weist was born in Springfield, Ohio, on January 6, 1937. She attended Ohio State University for her bachelor's and master's degrees, then received her doctorate in anthropology in 1970 from the University of California, Berkeley. Weist spent most of 1968 and 1969 on the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Lame Deer, Montana, doing research for her doctoral dissertation, The Northern Cheyennes: Diversity in a Loosely Structured Society (1970). Much of Weist's later research also focused on the Northern Plains tribes, specifically the Tsetsehestahese and Soota'e people, or the Northern Cheyenne. In addition to numerous papers, she authored two more books on this topic: Belle Highwalking: The Narrative of a Northern Cheyenne Woman (1979) and Annotated Bibliography of Northern Plains Ethnohistory (1985). Weist is Professor Emeritus at the University of Montana in Missoula where she taught in the Department of Anthropology from 1969 to 2000.
