Historical Note

James Walter Paxman (1861-1943) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, two months after his parents had crossed the plains. William Paxman and Ann Rushen Keys, James' parents, moved the family to American Fork, Utah, in 1862. James attended the public school in American Fork and later apprenticed to a shoemaker. Paxman also studied at Brigham Young Academy (now Brigham Young University). In 1883, James moved with his family to Nephi, Utah, where William became president of the Juab Stake. In 1884, James received a mission call and spent two years serving in the London Conference of the British Mission. Upon James' return, he was called to be a counselor to his father in the Juab Stake. In 1898, James succeeded as president of the Juab Stake when his father died. He married Julia Sudbury in 1888. Paxman was involved in several irrigation ventures and served one term as Juab County Clerk. He died in Salt Lake City and was buried back in Nephi.
