Historical Note

Reverend William "Bill" G. Sodt (1919-1996) was a long-term peace and social justice activist, and resident of Bellingham, Washington. A former U.S. Navy Chaplain, Sodt later served as Lutheran chaplin at Campus Christian Ministry (later renamed The Shalom Center), an ecumenical mission established to serve Western Washington University students off campus. He was renowned for his anti-war activities: Bill and local poet Jerry Burns started a print shop in the late 1960s which printed many posters advertising demonstrations and anti war events. He and his wife Rita hosted receptions in their home for visiting speakers, including one of the Berrigan brothers and Alan Watts. They also hosted a radio program for many years on student-run KUGS and were visited by the FBI in relation to their anti war activities.
