Historical Note
Craig C. Chandler was Director of Forest Fire & Atmospheric Research under the U.S. Forest Conservation agency. He oversaw and conducted research on fire behavior, fire prevention, and control of large forest fires. He and his colleagues created the Smokye Mouse program as a satire on Smokey Bear and the U.S. Forest Service. Smokye Mouse was a fictitious character whose purpose was to prevent fire research.
Content Description
This collection contains material on the Smokye Mouse program and includes a report titled "Guardian of Fire Research: The History of the Smokye Mouse Program, a Hemi-Decade of Success." The report includes a history of the program and drawings of Smokye Mouse. In addition, there are letters and memos regarding the Smokye Mouse program, and correspondence to U.S. presidents from Smokye Mouse.
