Historical Note

The University of Wyoming President's Office was created in 1887 with the founding of the University. It was the headquarters of University operations. The president reported to the Board of Trustees and with them governed the University's academic affairs, administration, legal affairs, information technology, institutional advancement, research and economic development, student affairs, and strategic planning.

Content Description

The University of Wyoming. President's Office records include correspondence, reports, memos, speeches, committee minutes, surveys, photographs, Board of Trustees records, and general office files documenting the operation of the University of Wyoming. Records in this collection document a range of administrative activities such as budgeting and finances, legislation, research projects, university-wide committees, academic programs, campus buildings, events, national college and university associations, and administrative operations. Additionally, issues in the University's history known as the Textbook Controversy (1947-1948), the Black 14 (1969), and the Matthew Shepard incident (1998) are documented.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The University of Wyoming President's Office records are arranged into seventeen series.

  • Series I. General Office Files, 1887-2012. This series consists of record sets and files that span multiple presidents' terms and contains undated materials which are unattributed to a specific university president. Also contains the permanent files of the office and vice-president search files as well as access to the archived Office of the President website.
  • Series II. Early Presidents' (1887-1922) Office Files, 1883-1939. Arranged in seven sub-series. This series consists of files created during the terms of the following UW Presidents: John Wesley Hoyt (1887-1890), Elmer E. Smiley (1898-1903), Charles Lewis (1903-1904), Frederick M. Tisdel (1904-1908), Charles O. Merica (1908-1912), Clyde A. Duniway (1913-1917), and Aven Nelson (1917-1922). For records created under Presidents Albanius Johnson (1891-1896) and Frank Graves (1896-1898) please see Series I.
  • Series III. Arthur G. Crane (1922-1941), 1919-1945. Arranged in six sub-series. This series consists of files created during Arthur G. Crane's term as UW President.
  • Series IV. James L. Morrill (1942-1945), 1938-1953. Arranged in four sub-series. This series consists of files created during James Morrill's term as UW President. Please note that Series III, Sub-series 6 contains some files created by President Morrill during his first few months as UW president.
  • Series V. George D. Humphrey (1945-1964), 1883-1978. Arranged in twenty-one sub-series. This series consists of files created during George Humphrey's term as UW President. Please note that Series IV, Sub-series 4 contains some files created by President Humphrey during his first few months as UW president.
  • Series VI. John T. Fey (1964-1966), 1964-1966. Arranged in two sub-series. This series consists of files created during John Fey's term as UW President.
  • Series VII. John E. King Jr. (1966-1967), 1966-1967. This series consists of files created during John King's term as UW President.
  • Series VIII. H.T. Person (1967-1968), 1967-1968. This series consists of files created during H.T. Person's term as UW President.
  • Series IX. William D. Carlson (1968-1979), 1936-1999. Arranged in twelve sub-series. This series consists of files created during William Carlson's term as UW President.
  • Series X. Edward H. Jennings (1979-1981), 1979-1981. Arranged in two sub-series. This series consists of files created during Edward Jennings's term as UW President. Also contains files created under UW President Hugh McFadden, 1979.
  • Series XI. Donald Veal (1981-1987), 1981-1987 Arranged in five sub-series. This series consists of files created during Donald Veal's term as UW President.
  • Series XII. Terry Roark (1987-1997), 1965-2014. Arranged in twelve sub-series. This series consists of files created during Terry Roark's term as UW President.
  • Series XIII. Philip Dubois (1997-2005), 1996-2011. Arranged in three sub-series. This series consists of files created during Philip Dubois' term as UW President.
  • Series XIV. Thomas Buchanan (2005-2013), 1954-2012. This series consists of files created during Buchanan's term as UW President.
  • Series XV. Robert Sternberg (July 2013-November 2013), 2013. This series consists of files created during Sternberg's term as UW President.
  • Series XVI. Richard McGinity (2013-2016), 2013-2016. This series consists of files created during McGinity's term as UW President.
  • Series XVII. Laurie Nichols (2016-2019), 2016-2019. This series consists of files created during Nichol's term as UW President.
