Biographical Note

Laurence Selling was educated at Yale and the medical school of Johns Hopkins. After post graduate work in Germany he returned to Oregon to practice and immediately entered upon a distinguished teaching career, first as a volunteer instructor in the University of Oregon Medical School and subsequently as Clinical Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department, a position he held until his retirement in 1947. Throughout his career, Dr. Selling had an abiding interest in research. Symbolic of that interest and his achievements were the Laurence Selling Student Research Scholarships, which were endowed to stimulate interest in research among the students in the Medical School. In addition to serving education through his own profession, Dr. Selling found time and energy to advance the general cause of learning. His colleagues have written, "We have known and now know many great physicians. Dr. Selling is one of the greatest."
