Historical Note

Yellowstone Park became the United States’ first national park in 1872. This collection contains a Yellowstone National Park branded album compiled by an unknown family to document a 1940 trip from Pennsylvania to Yellowstone and other national parks in the American West.

Content Description

The Yellowstone National Park Photo Album collection consists of 11¾ x 14 ¾ photo album, and some loose images, with a wooden cover, not attached, that says “Yellowstone Park” and has a carving of a bear and cub. This album documents the travels of unidentified people who left Colmar, Pennsylvania on June 26, 1940 and followed a route laid out by the Conoco Travel Club. In addition to Yellowstone, there are images of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Texas, California, Boulder Dam, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The collection includes promotional and tourist images of Yellowstone taken by Frank J. Haynes.
