Biographical Note

Lenora (Leni) LaMarche was born in Seattle in 1921. All her grandparents were born in Rhodes. Leni was known for her column written for Congregation Ezra Bessaroth, "Bavajadas de Benadam," (Ladino which translates to "people's foolish little words"). The column reflected her lifelong work as a storyteller, historian, and keeper of Sephardic culture and the Ladino language.

    Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Cynthia Altick on 12/9/82.

    Leni LaMarche tells the story of her grandparents and parents who all immigrated from the Island of Rhodes to Seattle. Leni talks about the difficulties she had married to a non-Jew. She raised three sons in the Jewish faith and her knowledge of Sephardic tradition and of the Ladino language has remained strong.
