Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Japanese American pioneer businessman. Born in Ehime Prefecture in 1856, Nishii emigrated from Japan ca. 1878, and worked as a laborer, restaurant owner, and hotel proprietor in Seattle, Tacoma, Alaska, and other places in the Puget Sound area and encouraged many younger men in the Yawatahama area of Ehime Prefecture to emigrate. He returned to Japan in 1924 and died in 1931. A statue was erected in his honor in his home town of Yawatahama in 1927; it was damaged in WWII and was rebuilt in 1958.
